What is the order process?

(1) Place your order - if you have trouble, you can call, or send and email. (2) We will send you a preview of your pattern to insure that you will like the product. (3)We will send you the final product; we will await your approval. For charted patterns, we can deliver them via email.

I'm in a hurry. Can you help?

We work to get your proof to you by email within 48 hours(usually 24 hours) of receipt of it, and have it in the mail within 24 hours after that.

If you want to give a completed craft to someone and your scheduling is tight, you should consider having us complete a quilt photo-mosaic quilt for you, or sewing one yourself. Other alternatives for tight scheduled would include long-stitch and punch needle. Selecting a smaller pattern - in a Warhol or 70's effect and using long-stitch or cross-stitch will also get you to the finishing line faster.

Do you sell your software?

We use more than 20 different programs, many written by us along with our artistic skills that simply cannot be incorporated into a program. So, unfortunately, we cannot package our software and the artistic skills and judgment that are used to create our product.

I'm a beginner/I'm advanced...are these crafts appropriate for me?

We have worked hard to make all our products "doable" by individuals at levels of skill. The primary difference is that an advanced stitcher will complete the craft faster, but everyone should get good results.

Can my kids do these crafts?

During our experiments with photo-mosaic quilts, an 11-year old with about 2 hours of sewing class experience from school was able to complete her quilt by herself, and she earned a blue ribbon for her efforts!

I am looking for something but don't see anything that fits my needs, or I need a variation on a product you have. Can you do it?

If you have an idea, we want to help. Our web site is just a small sample of what we can do. Even in our sample gallery, you will see products that aren't listed. Please "dream" then communicate your idea. Every single product is a custom-job, so special orders are often about the same price as the most similar craft.

Our designers go beyond using a simple conversion program - they use artistic skill and judgment. Every order is handled individually, by a human...who can speak on the phone. We have done numerous landscape quilts and hope someone will send us a picture of a completed one soon!

Do you put customer projects on your web site?

Yes, please send us pictures, we really want to see them, and we want customers to see them. Please let us know if you want your name and posted with your art.

How big does original my picture need to be?

We can work with most pictures from a wallet size up to 11x14. Don't be afraid to send a small picture, they are usually fine. Given the dimensions of your cropped picture, you can use the calculator to approximate the dimensions of your project using the calculator available here and on the order page.

What qualities make a picture good to use?

The most important thing is that there be one main subject, and it is best if that subject contrasts with the background. Of course, there will be times when you will want to do a wedding portrait - and that would usually be two people, but the project will start to get very large if you choose a photo with too many subjects.

Landscapes are not an exception. It is best that they have a focal point - or one main subject.

Pictures with good contrast between objects and throughout the picture make the best quality pictures however, we can usually "fix" any picture.

How big should my project be?

Most faces need 140 stitches across. If Photo & Stitch feels the picture is of low quality because the project is too small, we will indicate that is the case, and, provided that it is possible, we will present you an alternate larger pattern along with the one you specified so that you can judge what is best.

Warhol-style pictures can often be sized smaller than full-color pictures; We can usually get a Warhol-style picture down to 80-100 stitches across. Occasionally, we can get them to as low as 65, but quality degrades rapidly below 80.

If you would like, you can make a special note indicating you want your pattern as small as we can - just before quality degrades rapidly because ever picture is different.

The 70's effect is another choice for smaller pictures. They can sometimes reach the same small sizes as a Warhol.

If your picture is large, the best crafts to consider might be a photo-mosaic or punch-needle.

If you request a picture and we feel that it needs to be larger, we will include a proof at a larger size for your review when we do the proof.

Can I make a copy of my CUSTOM cross-stitch/needlepoint pattern for someone?

You may copy the pattern provided you leave the Photo & Stitch logo and contact information on it.

We request that you do not copy any of our stock patterns unless we offer them for free.

Do you offer discounts for teachers, classes, guilds, etc.?

Yes, please send us an email at sales@photoandstitch.com or give us a call and indicate the approximate numbers and any specifics. The earlier that you inform us, the better we can accommodate special orders. If you believe your order will be large (over 10) and you need it very quickly, try to give us a little notice so we can be prepared or let you know if there might be a problem.

Can you design a craft around a prayer or quote?

Yes. Just ask.

What type of fabric are punch-needle patterns printed on?

The best weaver's cloth we can find.

Quilt:

What do I get when I order a photo-mosaic quilt?

Providing that we can contact you via email, we will send you a proof of the photo-mosaic for your approval. Once you approve it, we will print it on fabric and send it to you.

Depending on size, you will receive your mosaic in a few pieces. By keeping the pieces smaller, we are able to insure that your fabric is of the highest quality, and it is printed well. You will find that the individual pieces "disappear" when you quilt down the lines of the mosaic squares, and stitch in the ditch of the seams.

For more information...

What type of fabric do you send me for my photo-mosaic quilt?

100% cotton poplin. If you want some other type of fabric, please let us know. If we can do the job, we will do it.

How long does it take to complete a quilt?

A mosaic measuring 18 " x 18" can be completed by a "pro" in just a 2-3 hours. Amateurs will get great results - but it takes a little longer. The first quilt, at 36"x36" took about 8 hours to complete, by an amateur, with no instructions... Now we have instructions!

Can I make a large photo-mosaic blanket?

We recommend that the photo-mosaic quilts be used as wall-hangings for two reasons. First and most importantly, it is easier to appreciate the photo-mosaics when you can move from a distance close to the art, thus seeing the big picture and then the little pictures that make up the mosaic as you move closer. Secondly, we recommend that you treat the quilt very gently, especially when washing because the fabric printing technology has not been around long enough for us to be certain how long it will last.

What does the photo-mosaic fabric feel like?

The fabric feels like good quality cotton poplin. We dye the fabric directly - it is not an appliqué. The feel (or "hand") is soft - not smooth like an appliqué that can rub off.

Can I use my family pictures for smaller pictures in the photo-mosaic?

Yes. You will find an option for this on the order form, however, you will need to size the pictures or crop them to a square, at a minimum of 200x200 pixels. We recommend a minimum of 100 pictures, but you might also consider using a library of ours in combination with some of your pictures.

Your tile photos should have a good quality at 200x200 pixels, so taking a picture smaller than that and sizing it up is not recommended.

Each picture should be square, but they don't have to be the same size.

What is the proper care for a photo-mosaic quilt?

We suggest vacuuming it - it is art. You can wash it, the fabric an ink are made to be washed, but if you do, please use hand-dishwashing liquid (not for the automatic dishwasher).

As with all quilts, you should keep it out of the sun so it will not fade.
